Delft University Wind Turbine, is a new student design team dedicated to ushering in a new era of distributed power generation by harnessing the wind to generate power with micro-turbines. This team is founded to participate in the International Small Wind Turbine Competition hosted by Hanze UAS.

DUWT - Chief Structural Engineer

February 2019 - June 2019

I joined DUWT as the structural engineer for a team setting out to design a Savonius turbine suitable for placement in urban environments. I designed the base, main shaft and chain transmission for the turbine. A chain drive was chosen after a conversation with the Aerodynamics group. They were unsure of the drive ratio they would need, as Savonius turbines are an iterative design process. Therefore, the turbine was designed to be built quickly and with many adjustable paremeters. This way, when the turbine was built it could be be tested in an open jet wind tunnel and tuned to the optimal shape and spacing of the turbine blades and ratio of the drive.

At the International Small Wind Turbine Competition our turbine has the lowest cost of construction and achieved the fourth highest power generated to cost ratio.
